I was pleasantly surprised at the level, quality, and type of work I was assigned to – they were challenging, intriguing...it required me to problem solve and think creatively looking at every problem.
Before I applied to Millie’s internship, I had never heard of a fully virtual internship, and therefore I had no idea how it worked. I was certainly doubtful for this reason, but the sheer thought of it was thrilling to me, so I went ahead and applied.
“Would this experience be fulfilling?”
“Would I get to learn anything from it at all?”
These doubts and questions came to me inevitably due to my previous internship experiences. They were boring and tedious, and I expected Millie’s Internship to be something similar. Then I was pleasantly surprised at the level, quality, and type of work I was assigned – they were challenging, intriguing, and allowed me to grow my knowledge base in tech because it required me to not only perform tasks such as implementing new APIs, using Parser Libraries, but also problem solve and think creatively looking at every problem.
My main task as a Tech & Product Development Intern at Millie was to develop the “School Recommender” engine, a project which consists of a multitude of sub-components and tools that contributes towards helping the Business Development team with their tasks. Some of those components are: building and maintaining a large database of schools, automating email out-reach through a scheduler, building social media bots and trackers for mass communications and data collection for marketing and operations purposes, and so on. This experience so far has allowed me to extensively develop my communication skills and collaborative skills as I am a part of the tech team, but I also get to work with other Millie team members from every department.
I have been interning with Millie for 3 months now, and I can proudly say that this was one of my best summer and internship experiences. It helped me enhance my working style and gave me real opportunities to collaborate with professionals on the variety of facets of the projects. If the opportunity allows, I would love to continue working for Millie in the future as it feels great to be part of this small community, and to know that what I am building is contributing to a much larger community of students.
